Many Montana livestock producers waited until the last minute, but in the end, more of them chose to keep their brands on the record books this year.
Typically when registration is due once a decade, about 15,000 brands go unregistered.
This year, that number dropped by about 7,000.
Officials attribute success of the program to the fact that for the first time ever, re-recording was able to be done online.
Christian Mackay of the MT Department of Livestock noted, "We started the re-record year with nearly 55,000 brands, we dropped 8,400, so we re-recorded 46,000, Now people are in the process of applying for new brands and so historically what we have seen is over the next ten years that number will ramp back up."
Only 5% of the re-recorded brands were done in person.
