It was five years ago that three Benefis employees from Great Falls were killed when their Mercy Flight plane crashed near Bozeman.

On Monday, the current Mercy Flight crew and the victims' families took time to reflect on the mission and work of Darcy Dengel, Paul Erickson, and Vince Kirol - three people whose passion for helping others has been carried on in their names.

February 6th is always a tough day for Dawn Dengel, but as years go on, she is able to focus less on the pain of losing her sister Darcy, and more on how to continue her sister's mission.

Dawn said, "The opportunity to share her passion and to help people be able to pursue that is really important."

For seven years before she passed away, Darcy spent one week each year volunteering at Camp Francis, a place for grieving children.

Now, in her place, Darcy's sister and parents volunteer their time each year to continue her efforts.

The family also set up a scholarship fund.
Scott Schandelson, a Mercy Flight nurse, said, "As I think about these days, it is interesting because we are continuing the work that they did perish doing. Everyday. Since that time we have transported over 4,000 patients and touched those lives."

Since the accident, the Benefis flight crew hasn't changed much, but has grown stronger as a team after the tragic experience.

Every anniversary, Dawn and the victim's families gather to lend support and share memories.

It's a tradition that's helping her heal as she and her family work to give back to the future generation of emergency personnel.

Dawn noted, "Sometimes I think 'pay it forward' sounds so cheesy, but it really isn't. Our family has benefited from that very idea."

The entire Benefis community was affected by the 2007 crash, so this year, to honor those who lost their lives, the hospital created a plaque to be displayed near their flight deck.

The area will be landscaped in the spring, with an official dedication following.

Over the past five years, more than $100,000 has been donated through the Benefis Health System Foundation in honor of Darcy, Paul, and Vince; the money is used for scholarships, patient treatment, and safety enhancements.
